近年來一直在納米醫(yī)學與腫瘤納米技術領域從事研究。
2005年以來發(fā)表學術論文100余篇,其中回國后獨立發(fā)表通信作者論文70余篇,相當一部分成果發(fā)表于Chem. Soc. Rev., Nature Protocols, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., JACS, Adv. Mater., Ad. Funct. Mater. Nano Lett., ACS Nano等國際權威刊物上。
全部論文總引用已超過11,000次,SCI H-index為48。獲國家自然科學基金委優(yōu)秀青年基金資助,江蘇省杰出青年基金資助;作為課題負責人承擔科技部973項目課題一項。
當前研究興趣包括納米材料的生物學效應與生物安全性研究;基于碳納米材料的生物成像、藥物輸送和治療治療研究;稀土上轉換發(fā)光納米材料在生物傳感、生物成像、以及癌癥治療上的應用;新型多功能復合納米材料的開發(fā)及其在多模態(tài)癌癥成像與治療上的應用;基于有機高分子納米材料的腫瘤光學治療與聯(lián)合治療;以及基于納米技術的干細胞研究和細胞療法研究等。
應國際著名期刊Biomaterials主編、美國工程院院士Kam W. Leong教授邀請,劉莊教授出任Biomaterials雜志新一屆副主編。劉莊教授是該期刊新一屆編委中唯一一位來自中國大陸的副主編。
2021年8月,蘇州大學功能納米與軟物質研究院教授劉莊、陳倩以及上海市肺科醫(yī)院教授楊洋團隊合作,開發(fā)了一種可吸入的含人血管緊張素轉化酶2(hACE2)的納米捕獲劑。該藥物能與人體內的宿主細胞競爭結合SARS-CoV-2,由此保護人體宿主細胞免受感染。該成果發(fā)表于美國《國家科學院院刊》。[2]
