黑人工人卡爾（塞繆爾?杰克遜 Samuel L. Jackson 飾）十歲的女兒被兩個(gè)白人蹂躪了，在那種族歧視盛行的歲月，卡爾不相信法律能幫他和女兒討回公道。于是，他徑自找到了那個(gè)家伙并將他們射殺。復(fù)仇后的卡爾直接來到了警察局投案自首。年輕律師杰克（馬修?麥康納 Matthew McConaughey 飾）被指派為卡爾的辯護(hù)律師，由于卡爾根本不相信法律會(huì)對(duì)黑人公正，所以他和杰克沒有達(dá)成一致。果然，庭上卡爾收到了不公正的對(duì)待。法律系那大學(xué)生艾倫桑德拉?布洛克 Sandra Bullock 飾）這時(shí)出現(xiàn)了，她站在杰克這一邊，決定為卡爾做無罪辯護(hù)。
